The Evergreen Cooperatives of Cleveland, Ohio are pioneering innovative models of job creation, wealth building, and sustainability. Evergreen’s employee-owned, for-profit companies are based locally and hire locally. We create meaningful green jobs and keep precious financial resources within our community. Our workers earn a living wage and build equity in their firms as owners of the business.

The first Evergreen Cooperative businesses are — Evergreen Cooperative Laundry, Ohio Cooperative Solar, and Green City Growers Cooperative.

Evergreen is a partnership between the residents of six of our city’s neighborhoods and some of Cleveland’s most important “anchor institutions” — the Cleveland Foundation, the City of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and many others. Veterans of America’s 20th Century civil rights movement will enter the 21st Century Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles on Sunday, November 20.

Known as the “Council of Elders,” they will step inside the nationwide encampments to symbolically share the torch of hope and justice and engage the Occupiers in dialogue about defining movements of the past. “We want to contribute to this intergenerational movement,” says Dr. Vincent Harding, activist and writer in the civil rights movement. “We are thankful for the efforts of Occupy Wall Street to unite the 99% and bring the many gifts and great energy of millions into effective action to transform our nation.”

Study: Recycling efforts expanding in N.C.

From the AP:

A new study says recycling efforts in North Carolina are steadily expanding, adding jobs to the economy and even growing despite the sluggish economy.

The study released Tuesday by the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources measures the impact of recycling in North Carolina.

It found that more than 15,000 people across the state are employed in the recycling industry and that recycling is increasing even in industries staggered by the recession and weak recovery.

Even though the construction industry was particularly hurt by the economy, recycling efforts in that segment are not slowing. The study found that an all-time high of more than 112,000 tons of construction waste was recycled last year.

Department Secretary Dee Freeman says he expects continued growth from the segment in the years ahead.

There would be some principal write-downs, random cash payouts for those who were foreclosed, and money to buy off nonprofits in the states that work on housing issues (a classic Fannie/Freddie Dem friendly tactic Morgenson and Rosner exposed nicely in their book Reckless Endangerment). The settlement looks vague and stupid, and will probably be executed with the care and competence of HAMP. But let’s put that aside. …
